Malaysia will pioneer efforts to explore the global halal vaccine market which has a US$80 billion (RM296.5 billion) potential.
The Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) said this would be possible with the establishment of a Saudi Arabian-owned halal vaccine plant, AJ Pharma Holding, which is set to start operations in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan in 2017.
Chief executive Datuk Seri Jamil Bidin said the company concerned has started investments towards developing the plant under its third phase at a cost of RM300 million.
“They have expressed a high interest in finding ways to produce halal vaccine products,” he said after his welcoming remarks at the World Halal Conference here today.
Jamil said the vaccine products are a very strategic commodity towards meeting the market demand of the 1.8 billion Muslims, apart from further strengthening the halal industry.
He also said that at present, there were no vaccine producers in the world with a halal certification and it has been suggested that products that are plant-based, be certified as such.
Themed, “Halal Economy: A Profitable Convergence”, the two-day conference began today. It is being held in conjunction with the World Halal Summit that started on March 30.
